What the figure counts
The figure counts residents: everyone registered as living in the Union, together with the residents of the Affiliated City of Portsmere, which remains under the Union's jurisdiction. It is not a count of the people in the city on a given day, so visitors and commuters are not included.
How it is calculated
The Union's civil register records births, deaths and changes of address. Starting from the estimate at 1 July 2026, the figure moves forward as these are entered.
Most changes are small increases. Now and then the figure goes down by one or two, when deaths and departures in a short period outnumber births and arrivals. The calculation is the same for everyone, so two people looking at the home page at the same moment see the same number.
Portsmere
PortsMere City Hall keeps its own register and reports it to the Union once a year. The Portsmere part of the figure stays unchanged between reports, so all of the movement you see on the home page comes from the Union's register. About one in six of the people counted live in Portsmere.
Area and density
The Grand Peninsula covers about 3,300 square kilometres. Spread over that area, the estimated residents give an overall density of about 2,600 people per square kilometre.
- Area
- About 3,300 square kilometres
- Residents per square kilometre
- About 2,600, across the whole peninsula
- Households
- About 3.4 million, an average of 2.5 people each
- Growth of the Union register
- About 0.8% a year, at the present pace
The average hides a large difference between the centre and the edge. Most residents live in the central districts, where buildings are tallest and closest together. Density falls steadily towards the edge of the peninsula, where there is more open land.
Age of residents
The median age of residents is 39. Half of all residents are younger than this and half are older.
| Age | Share of residents | Residents, thousands |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 | 15.0% | 1,275 |
| 15 to 24 | 12.5% | 1,063 |
| 25 to 44 | 32.0% | 2,721 |
| 45 to 64 | 25.5% | 2,168 |
| 65 and over | 15.0% | 1,275 |
